The Bottom Line
By all objective measures, Auden Black lives in just about the perfect world. So why is he, and everybody else, so miserable?
Auden is a crane operator on a construction crew in near-future Toronto, watching as automation replaces his coworkers one by one. Society still takes care of replaced workers’ basic needs, so the question becomes not how to survive, but how to find meaning and enjoyment in a life without work.
Through Auden’s story, and that of his coworkers, The Bottom Line tackles issues of identity and purpose, as well as what it means to be part of a community without contributing in the work-oriented way we’re accustomed to in western society.
In the vein of solarpunk, The Bottom Line approaches the future with an optimism sorely needed in such a dire global climate, but that doesn’t mean the year 2063 is without problems. By showing the very human elements of a machine-driven future, we can gain greater insight into how we might behave in a world that no longer needs us.

About Sophie
Sophie Edwards is too tall to stand up in the basement washrooms of most Toronto bars, but she does her best. A lifelong entrepreneur and ADHD-er, Sophie always has multiple projects on the go.
She is the creator of We Have Always Existed, an ongoing essay series that explores the tremendous wealth of transgender histories in the ancient Mediterranean. Originally a YouTube series, it has expanded to include a growing collection of zines, created in concert with designer Mike Sloane.
Having worked hard to learn to feminize her voice, Sophie now offers voice feminization coaching to trans women and trans feminine nonbinary people.
She is also the author of a number of works of fiction. Her work has been published in a number of literary journals, including QT, Last Girls Club, Vagabonds, The Book Smuggler’s Den, and others. Her debut novel, The Bottom Line, was published by Vraeyda Literary, and will be available again soon.
Sophie also runs a marketing agency, is the drummer and lyricist in the bands Gravare and Gnargoyle, and occasionally sleeps. She lives in Toronto with her partner and their four cats, Midna, Cinder, Button, and Bean.
